The Super Bowl 2010

I wasn't all that interested in this game. In fact, I missed the first half hour of it. I had it in my head that it started at 6:30 (it did, in another time zone), and I only discovered my error when I called my mother, who was already watching it. It turned out to be a really good game! The Saints beat the Colts fair and square.

Usually I don't pay any attention to the commercials during the Super Bowl, but I know some people who work for a company that advertised (near the end as it turned out), so I wanted to see their spot. The minute I turned on the game, there was a blitz of ads with the theme of the emasculation and oppression of American men by women. Dodge: men mournfully testifying to the numerous humiliations they endure to maintain a relationship with a woman, Dockers: men need to start wearing the pants again, and FLO TV (not sure what that is): men need diversion as they are forced to help women shop for lingerie. I was starting to get a little steamed up! (Note to straight guys: Do not spend a trip to Victoria's Secret sulking and watching TV on your PDA! This is your opportunity to improve your sex life).

The only other commonality I noticed was that there were a lot of men with beards shown in the commercials, (maybe to compensate for their oppression). There were two ads I liked. One, for the Kia Sorento, seemed to celebrate the emotional support provided to women by sock monkeys and other stuffed animals. This is something I can relate to. The other showed a Mercedes driving through an enormous  plate glass window. I rarely see a scene of fictional mayhem and destruction that I don't enjoy. As Jackie Chan said, "Good place for explosion!"

The last time I saw SB commercials was in 2000. RuPaul was flogging some job website, I recall. In fact nearly all the ads that year were for now-defunct web sites.
